Dear Josue
ReplyDeleteIt is difficult for me to give you advice since I am a high school teacher living in Denmark. In the part of the country where I live we mostly have Danish students in the high schools but this does not mean that students in my high school do not have experiences similar to yours. Many of my students feel that the teachers (including me) are to busy and their parents do not have the knowledge to help them and not all of them are able to go to tutoring because they cannot get any transportation home from school if they have to stay in the late afternoon for tutoring due to public transportation is quite bad in my neighborhood and students in DK are not allowed to drive a car until they turn 18 years old. What should they do? They should do exactly what you have done but you feel you did not succeed. Well, who is responsible for you to learn math? Mostly you. Have you tried to talk to your teacher privately during the break and explained the teacher, that you have troubles with math but really want to learn? If not try so! Most teachers want to help students that really want to struggle at least I want and I use lots of my spear time helping students like you. You could also try to find some help at the internet. Maybe you can get tutoring from someone in return for some other favor. Maybe you can teach your math tutor Spanish, maybe you could do some garden work in return, if you tutor is a grownup. If you earn some money you can always pay someone to tutor you. People who like math are often very eager to teach their subject since they are very dedicated to it. You could write to your school paper and ask if others have had the same problems like you and if they have some advice for you. Maybe some of the good math student read your article and offer you to help. Please do not give up, anybody can learn math. Different people just learn in different ways and this has nothing to do with race or gender.

Hi Josue,
ReplyDeleteI love you name, by the way. I have met just one other Josue before when I was teaching 1st-2nd grade in Denver. He's in 6th grade now.
I think the comments above to keep trying to ask your teacher for help make good sense. But I also think that it says a lot that you are making such a strong statement about asking for help. It is disconcerting for me to hear you bring up race--I am one of you typical white, female, middle-aged teachers but discrimination is an issue that I have tried to figure out for a very long time. I lived in So. Cal. for a while and now CO. I guess anywhere that I've lived, while I've met teachers who might be "too busy," many would certainly respond favorably to your persistence. The way you come across is someone who is driven and has a lot to be proud of. I'm very confident you will find that teacher who will spend a few extra minutes with you. That kind of initiative on your part asking for assistance says a lot. Please just keep trying...your "asking for help" today is the sign of a vocal leader tomorrow.
best wishes. I also absolutely loved math in high school, though, so I could be a little biased that way.
